NEW PUPPY CARE
NEW PUPPY CARE
Working with your puppy...

Supervise your puppy closely during the first few weeks. It may help to let your
puppy drag a leash around in the house (supervised) so you can stop him/her
before they misbehave.

As you work with your puppy, he/she learns the rules of your house and will look
to you as his/her pack leader. It will be easier to correct or change bad habits in a
new environment. Once the newness has worn off, if you try to change his/her
already established habits, they can't figure out why all the rules have changed
("Why can't I sit on the couch?").

Puppies can learn, but keep training sessions short and fun, no more than 5
minutes at a time. Don't be too hard on your puppy when he/she makes a mistake.
Remember they want to please you.

Crate training is a big favor you can do for your puppy. It's his/her safe haven from
the world. From their crate, they get used to new sights, sounds and people
without feeling pressured to react. A crate relieves them of all that responsibility
and the opportunity to destroy the house. That's effective management!

If your puppy is left alone for several hours every day, start crate training now,
even if you're just in the next room. They need to learn to spend time without you.
A puppy that gets constant attention and then is suddenly left alone for eight
hours; may bark, chew, or develop other behavior problems due to separation
anxiety.

Make training time playtime too. Talk, laugh, and have fun with your puppy as they
learn; sit, down and other basic commands. Be over-exuberant with praise at first,
so they know they got it right. Be sure to praise your puppy with happy
enthusiasm. A firm, "No" tells them they have made a wrong choice, and they
should learn the difference very quickly.

Obedience Classes...

Take your puppy to canine education classes. These classes give you hands-on
practice with an instructor to guide you when you get stuck, and are as much
about training YOU as the dog. Training helps you build a bond with your dog that
lasts a lifetime.

Puppies can enroll in classes as early as four months of age, as soon as they have
all their shots. Puppy classes provide critical socialization training that will help
them get along with other dogs as they grow up. PETCO and PetSmart offer canine
education classes. Check with your local stores for the schedule. You can also
search the Internet for local dog trainers in your area.

Visit and watch a session to see if you like the instructor's methods and
relationship with the dogs and students.

If you have any questions that we have not covered, please don't hesitate to

We wish you and your new puppy a lifetime of happiness.
